Professional bird photographer and writer, Arthur Morris, stalks long-billed curlews as they zigzag and dart across the beach in Morro Bay, California.
Arthur’s determination is on full display as he works obsessively for a full hour to track the elusive birds in flight using a slow shutter speed. It’s an artistic effect that blurs the wings and background while keeping the eye of the bird tack sharp.
Attempting to photograph Arthur is as challenging as capturing the erratic curlews. Despite being 74, Arthur mimics his subjects. He’s fleet of foot and in constant motion.
As I watch him work, it becomes apparent that Arthur simply works harder than most other photographers and he’s passionately honed the craft and skill of photography through years of joyful practice.
He also has fun doing it.
While I shadowed Arthur, he chatted openly about his upbringing, family and life philosophy. Arthur’s love for teaching was evident as he freely doled photography tips and techniques.
Spending an hour with Arthur was enlightening and inspirational. His passion for photography is something I greatly admire and I hope to sustain in my own life.
